Swine Flu Update (6.30.2009)

The Leavenworth County Health Department confirmed a second case of H1N1 in Leavenworth County on Monday, June 29th. The patient is recovering and contacts are being monitored.

KDHE released a media advisory regarding the World Health Organization’s decision to declare that the H1N1 outbreak is now at a Level 6 or Pandemic Stage (the highest level on the scale). The decision was made based on the geographic spread of the disease and not the severity of the illness that has been observed so far.

The Leavenworth County Health Department is continuing to work with KDHE and other healthcare providers to identify cases in Kansas. Any close contacts will be appropriately managed.

The symptoms of the 2009 H1N1 flu virus are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include:

  • Fever greater than 100 degrees, body aches, coughing, sore throat, respiratory congestion and in some cases, diarrhea and vomiting.
Individuals who experience these symptoms should contact their health care provider.

The Leavenworth County Health Department encourages individuals to take the following steps to reduce the spread of flu by washing your hands, covering your cough or sneeze , stay home when you are sick and see your doctor if you are ill.
